How to Overcome Unemployment
What is unemployment?
A simple definition is the state of being unemployed. This occurs when a person is actively searching for employment and is unable to find work.
Another definition from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines it as “people who do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the past four weeks and are currently available for work. Also, people who were temporarily laid off and are waiting to be called back to that job”. This constitutes unemployment, as well.
Unemployment occurs for many reasons, political, economical, educational and other social factors impacting a country and its citizens and especially if that country is following a particular ideology that does not evoke positive sentiments.
The reality though is that unemployment is long term and is an ongoing problem for the population of many countries. With the uncertainties of the times, it is doubtful that this unemployment situation will be eased any time soon and could get even worse as some economic forecasters have predicted that potentially, there could be another recession on the horizon.
Just a few people are expect to be out of a job for an extended period of time but as the economy takes longer to be resuscitated that time period gets longer. However, not withstanding all that has been said above, there are factors that can reduce the time it takes to find a job and also assist in overcoming unemployment. Let’s now look at some of these:
Have all the options been considered?
Some creativity and flexibility would need to be exercised in order to get in the workforce. Look at present skills set, given that the age of technology is upon us, are you satisfied with them and are they transferable to other industries? You could also consider part time employment as well as selling your services and skills online.
How about reaching out?
You need to be networking with family, friends and community groups. These are great ways to let others know that you are available and ready for work and possibly someone might just know of an opening for which you could apply. Use of social media is also a good idea including Facebook and LinkedIn to post your availability for a job and what you have to contribute.
Prepare yourself by taking short affordable courses, reading books, researching online and participating in networking events to improve your skills or to acquire new ones. You could also consider development of a small business, to gain experience.
Volunteering your time is another good way to show you are willing to work. It helps you gain experience in your chosen field and provides you with a conversation topic for an interview session. Even just a couple of weeks here and there will help as you struggle to rise above unemployment.
Oh Yes, blogging too. It is free and it will help improve your important IT skills and will give a creative communication outlet and a break from sending job applications. You can write about a hobby, your take on politics and crime or perhaps document your search for a job. It also shows you have been using your time productively and you never know which potential employer s might be impressed when they read it.
What is more, if you have gone through all of these and still can’t find a job, probably you are too choosey in terms of entry level jobs as against middle management or executive positions. In this regard I would like to suggest that you begin to seriously think about creating your own job and be your own boss working from the comfort of your home. The bills are always important and must be paid. So even another income stream would be worthwhile.
There are many marketing companies online that can work with you and get you established in a short while. They can provide you with all the tools you need, so it would be hassle free. Some companies charge a membership fee, others are free but either way it is worth it. I am going to suggest this one for you to try out and see if you like it. Remember you would not be alone; a whole community of marketers would be behind you. I have been using it and have had good results and infact it’s the first company that has assisted me in making my first $20.00 online.
